Moving to another state is not a small feat, particularly when you’ve never lived out of town before. It can be a daunting task to tackle which might give you a few headaches unless you plan in advance and write a list of everything you need to do.
One of the first things you need to take care of is getting rid of things you no longer need. You don’t want to take with you stuff that is no longer needed, so de-cluttering might be quite important at this time. Once you start packing, you need to make sure that you’ve only packed the necessary items. Don’t forget that the more things you take with you, the more your truck rental will also cost due to its size, depending on what you rent. So basically the less you take with you, the less the transportation costs will be.
Next you have to take care of the actual packing. Once you’ve successfully de-cluttered your home, you know that everything you take with you is something that you will really need in the new place. Make sure to pack everything carefully since they might break or get damaged during transportation. Also different parts of the country have different laws and regulations on what is considered dangerous items to have with you. If you have guns with you or any other items such as a pepper spray or mace that are allowed in your old place, make sure these are also considered legal in the new state as well.
Car insurance is very important in the new place so make sure to check with various insurance carriers before moving. You need to get car insurance in the new town or city as well. Also you have to know about minimum liability laws as it might be different from state to state. If you have a policy, talk about it with your insurer to see if anything needs to be changed, removed or amended.
Speaking of cars, you will also need to change your car registration as each state has a different registration. Depending on where you go, you will have a different number of days to do it, ranging between 30 to 60 days or maybe even more. When you register your car in the new place, you also need to send back the registration plates to your old location. There are quite a few things to do here so make sure that you do your due diligence so you don’t get into trouble right after moving.
An important aspect of moving to another state is transporting all your belongings to the new place.
