No matter how often you take your car to the car wash, you are most likely missing the hidden mess within your vehicle. Take a look at the car and ask yourself, where is the mess hiding? Hopefully you’ll head straight to the glove compartment. This space becomes the catchall for everything from your wife’s emergency makeup kit to the trash from last Monday’s lunch.
Empty all the contents. To get a handle on your cluttered glove compartment, start by removing everything from the space. Pull everything out and set it on the driver’s seat. Wedge, yank and peel anything stuck in the compartment or stuck to the walls or bottom. You will have a large pile of stuff on the driver’s seat of the car that you have to sort through before you can move on.
Sort contents into three piles – trash, keep and put away. Take the time to really look at everything you have been keeping in that packed glove compartment. The junk and trash should be piled straight into a trashcan. Everything else needs to be split into two piles, the things that you need to keep in your glove compartment and those that belong somewhere else such as in the house.
Maintain essential papers. The important papers that you need to keep in your car include the vehicle registration and insurance information as well any emergency contact information you might need. Emergency information can include your AAA and other roadside assistance information. Check the dates on the paperwork and keep the insurance card that is active and the registration for the present year. If you need to keep old copies, then file them somewhere other than in your vehicle. Place your now small stack of important papers into the clean glove compartment. Include the vehicle manual and at most, a few clean napkins for emergencies.
Keep it clean. After getting the clutter and mess out of your car, stop bringing it back in. Keep your glove compartment clean and organized by only adding necessary items and making an agreement with yourself to only put an item in if you also take something else out. Glove compartments can become the trashiest tiny space in your vehicle. Stop this mess from getting worse by following these steps and cleaning out the glove compartment.
