It is not common to find people who have been involved in an automobile accident. Now, there is need to be one to understand the aftermath of an accident, and how painful and stressful it can be. When a car accident results in the death of a loved one, the pain and stress is almost unbearable. Thus, it is important to have a very good auto insurance plan so n the case of an accident, the policy holder is not running around trying to figure out what is covered, and what is not. So, how does the whole process go exactly? Read on.
In the case of a car accident, the first thing one should do is contact law enforcement (911). Do not take any risks. If you “think” no one is hurt, call 911. Only do not call if you are one hundred percent sure no one is injured. Even if there are no apparent injuries, one may be suffering from internal injuries, which can in turn be fatal. Thus, it is important to really be sure that not calling law enforcement is justified. Even if you see there are no injuries, it may be a good idea to still contact law enforcement. Why? Auto insurance companies tend to take claims more serious when there is a police report present.
Once all bodily injuries have been identified, and have had action take to help them, it is time to call a tow truck. Some policies include a towing service. If this I the case, call your insurance agent and ask them for the phone number(s) of the towing companies. It may be a good idea to have a list of towing companies available in your car, to be better prepared for an accident.
Upon officers arriving to the scene of the accident, you will be asked for your license, registration, and proof of insurance. If any of those involved in the accident are not able to provide proof of insurance, you will most likely be fined. The next step is filling out a report, and stating what exactly happened. Both sides will have to do this. The report may include some specific questions including you were driving, how fast you were going, who was in the car with you, and so on. It is important to be honest in the report. Pictures may be taken of the accident scene by officers, for feature reference.
You will then need to contact your insurance company, and notify them of what has happened. They will likely ask for the same information the officers did in the report, and possibly more. The insurance agent will likely provide you with your best route, based on your current policy.
From this point, there are a number of possible outcomes. If there are people in the hospital as a result of the accident, or vehicles are in the repair shop, there will be different scenarios. Now, either way, you need to follow the instructions of the insurance company, or more specifically, the agent, in order to insure that you get the most coverage possible.
If you have a minimum plan, the insurance company will usually only pay for the damages of the other vehicle in the accident (if it was your fault). If it was the other drivers fault, their insurance will pay for your damages (vehicle, medical, etc..). If your costs exceed what the others insurance policy covers, they will be financially responsible to cover the rest.
It is important to know what to do when an accident arises. For those who have been in an accident, it is safe to say that it can be a life changing experience, and if not, an experience that will change for a long time to come. Having a good insurance plan or company will help greatly in case the situation arises, and knowing what to do will also help.
